obama has had a chance to do that, and he has not done it. his message seems to be i've done the best that i can. hang on, it's going to get better. just don't go back. but clearly this debate is one of those rare political events where both candidates are the underdogs. >> apparently, if you listen to it. >> yeah. so there is maybe an opportunity for somebody to surprise. >> it is very hard, it seems to me, in a debate to be -- to show your likability skills, right? >> right. i think that right. the other thing that's hard for mitt romney is he just seems weird to people and they can't relate to him and he doesn't seem in touch with their lives and that's particularly true for women voters. if you're an attack dog in the debate, you're not going to fill in the mode. >> bill clinton was very likeable and he did that in a debate. that's not mitt romney's strength. why should he try to do it there. >> we have a lot of recent history. sometimes he blows it, bitting $10,000 but a lot of times he's come back and done quite well and stepped up to t

, obama, romney, who's the better debater both have clear debate skills and shown those in their debates over the time. governor romney had very good debates in the republican primaries against his opponents and was very effective in those. president obama had some pretty good debates particularly the general election debates against senator mccain. the new format they're using i'm not sure it favors either candidate. it gives president obama a little bit more opportunity to talk at length which he wants to do about his record and about the things he's going to do going forward and also to draw some contrast with governor romney. for governor romney it may give him an opportunity rather than looking like he has canned answers to show people he's more thoughtful and warmer and more likable. >> dan balz, both warm and likable. thank you very much. thanks for being with us. >> thanks. >> up next, new questions about security and intelligence behind the benghazi terror attack. former ambassador to iraq chris hill joining us live here in denver. you're watching "andrea mitchell reports" only

the barack obama i heard on the debate stage was the barack obama i have been listening to now for four years. he sounded very much like himself. i don't think he was terribly bad. i think he has a very weak case and i think that the circumstances in the country present the challenging candidate with all kinds of opportunities. mitt romney was on his game and he took advantage of those opportunities. the president is saddled with weak circumstances and therefore a weak case. and it is not surprising to me that he didn't argue it very well and the other thing is despite his reputation as being this world class orator, maybe he is with a set piece speech. there was not a lot of evidence in the past that he was ever a great debater. i don't think this thing was as big a shock as the president's supporters on the left feel. i think they all thought he was 10 feet tall. he is not 10 feet tall. never has been. >> chris: about the specific issue of the truth squadding, fact checking of romney, and they continue to press. i don't think it is a very accurate thing, the $5 trillion tax cut and ta

when mitt romney beat president obama in last night's televised debate. so the first televised presidential debate that we had was in 1960. here are all of the other years that we have since have televised presidential debates. every four years now we have these debates on tv. the only years, though, so these are all the years, right, right? the only years, though, in which you had an incumbent president running against a challenger in all of the years we've had presidential debates on tv are these years. so in terms of understanding the historical context of what happened last night when mitt romney beat president obama in this first debate, this is the universe of like things to compare it to. this is how to understand it in terms of american political history. it's only these years right here. that's it. now, by definition, you never have an incumbent president in this situation more than once. presidents can only serve two terms so there's only one opportunity when they carry into that debate, when they're running for re-election, they carry into that
